Clinical Supervision

Nurturing Excellence through Clinical Supervision

“A therapist is like a guide, offering support and guidance as a person explores their own inner landscape”.
Dr. Irvin Yalom (The Gift of Therapy)

As in therapy, in Clinical Supervision the role of the supervisor is to further resource the professional within their own specific professional domain. It aims at creating an environment in which the dynamics and pressure of the work can be felt, explored, understood, and new ways of working can be co-created by supervisee and supervisor. Reflective practice is central to the process of supervision.

In the case of clinical psychotherapy supervision, the aim is to explore a client’s presentation; the relationship between client and the supervisee; the interventions of the supervisee; the supervisee’s own inner process; the working alliance between supervisee and supervisor; and the wider context in which the work takes place (the organisation). As endorsed by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), supervision is deemed essential for maintaining therapist competency and accreditation.

I use an integrative model of supervision when working with all supervisees.

I can support a supervisee by:

  • Enhancing self-awareness and self-reflection
  • Providing a structured framework for discussing clinical cases and challenges
  • Supporting ongoing professional development and skill enhancement
  • Promoting adherence to ethical guidelines and best practices
  • Fostering a culture of accountability and continuous learning
  • Offering a safe space for processing emotions and managing burnout
  • Facilitating exploration of personal biases and blind spots
  • Encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing among peers
  • Strengthening therapeutic relationships with clients
  • Ensuring the maintenance of high standards of care and professional competence
